Geek Tip: Count Down to Any Big Day Online

The mathlete in me loves countdowns. There are seven month left until Christmas. Less than 30 days until the new iPhone comes out. Four days until my new shoes arrive via UPS. Just a few hours until the season finale of Gossip Girl. You get the picture. If you aren't a numbers person naturally (hey, we can't all be Lindsay Weir) you can build anticipation for your big day - be it a walk down the aisle, high school reunion, or even the weekend - using your everyday gadgets.

Calculate Days Left From the Web: If you just want to know the number of days you have left, visit this website, type in the date and let the site's algorithms do the number crunching for you.
Install the Countdown Dashboard Widget: If you're a Mac user, install the free countdown dashboard widget. It's generic, so you set a date and time and it starts ticking. You can also set alerts. It's aces for long term goals (you have 45 days to work out before hitting the beach in that tiny bikini you just bought!) and daily reminders.
Download the iPhone Countdown Calendar: If you're an iPhone or iPod Touch user you can get your geek on with this handy app ($3).
Put a Countdown on iGoogle: You can put the Countdown to Any Google Gadget on your iGoogle page and countdown to any date you choose from your Google home page.

One of the best applications I've downloaded to help with my iTunes collection. I am extremely OCD about my iTunes library as well, but I don't feel like paying for fixTunes. I found something else to help with something I'm a bit obsessive over. I absolutely have to have lyrics to my songs whenever possible and with over 3000 songs, it's irritating to put in so many Google searches.

GimmeSomeTune does an automatic search for every song without lyrics as soon as it begins playing. It also searches for Album art as well. It's totally free (although they do ask for an optional donation).

Cool Download: Election 08 for Your iPhone

If there has ever been a year to vote, this would be the one to do it! Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, obviously CitizenSugar has you covered on the details, but Election 08 is a handy little app to have in your pocket as well.

For only a buck at the App Store, Election 08 shows you real time results from polls about who is winning each state, and electoral vote estimates on who will take the General Election. Which of course, will either be a helpful tool to keep you informed, or cause you to go totally OCD from checking it every five minutes. Plus you can look back and see state-by-state results of past elections from 1992-2004! Facts that you can whip out at your next "Party" party to impress your pals. Aren't you smart!

Download of the Day: Wii Transfer

Wish you could better sync your Mac with your Nintendo Wii? Well Wii Transfer 2.6 is a free download that will help you do just that.

Wii Transfer makes it easy to share music, pics, and movies right on your Wii using the Internet Channel on your console.

You can also check out your iTunes playlists and iPhoto albums on your TV. And gotta love this part - you can easily save your Miis from your Wii on your laptop and save them as JPEG images!

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Download of the Day group
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Download of the Day")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

New Hulu widgets include the player widget, Summer widget, show and movie widget, and picks widget, so you can select the best one to suit your needs.

With the widgets, you'll constantly get updates on the most popular or recently added videos, and you can even watch all your favorite vids from the widget, making it that much easier to watch TV while at work - shh, did I just say that?!

BlackBerry Media Sync Is Now Available for Download!

Download of the Day: Send Tab URLs

Being the nut job that I am, I can't seem to cut back on the amount of tabs I keep open in Firefox - which usually total anywhere from 50 - 100. I know, I'm killing my RAM in the process and my MacBook is secretly threatening to crash on me once and for all. I used to be a big fan of CopyAllURLs, a handy Firefox add-on that would copy all of my open tabs and I could paste them in a text file. Therefore if Firefox ever crashed, and it didn't restore properly, I had all my fabulous tabs saved for future reference.

So you can understand how upset I was when I downloaded Firefox 3 and realized that CopyAllURLs wasn't compatible with the latest version of Firefox. Thankfully I found an even better add-on - Send Tab URLs. Send Tab URLs will not only create a list of all of the tabs from your browser, but it will send you an email with them as well (up to 24 tabs max)!

Where to Find Free Video Downloads on iTunes

I know, getting constant updates in your RSS reader with the 99-cent movie of the week on iTunes is pretty sweet and such a nice surprise. But what if you could easily check out all the free video downloads from iTunes? Yes you heard correctly - free downloads on iTunes, they do exist! Apple's iTunes Store is finally aggregating all of their free video content in one handy spot, so you can find the goods quicker and easier.

There aren't a ton of videos to choose from - yet - so let's keep our fingers crossed that Apple adds some more to their $0 line-up! To access the videos, go to the iTunes store and click on TV shows. Once you're on the TV page, scroll down to find the "Free On iTunes" content. Keep in mind that the free downloads are currently only available to US residents.
