Geek Tip: Count Down to Any Big Day Online

Posted By Tech on May 18, 2009 at 3:30AM

The mathlete in me loves countdowns. There are seven month left until Christmas. Less than 30 days until the new iPhone comes out. Four days until my new shoes arrive via UPS. Just a few hours until the season finale of Gossip Girl. You get the picture. If you aren't a numbers person naturally (hey, we can't all be Lindsay Weir) you can build anticipation for your big day — be it a walk down the aisle, high school reunion, or even the weekend — using your everyday gadgets.

  • Calculate Days Left From the Web: If you just want to know the number of days you have left, visit this website, type in the date and let the site's algorithms do the number crunching for you.
  • Install the Countdown Dashboard Widget: If you're a Mac user, install the free countdown dashboard widget. It's generic, so you set a date and time and it starts ticking. You can also set alerts. It's aces for long term goals (you have 45 days to work out before hitting the beach in that tiny bikini you just bought!) and daily reminders.
  • Download the iPhone Countdown Calendar: If you're an iPhone or iPod Touch user you can get your geek on with this handy app ($3).
  • Put a Countdown on iGoogle: You can put the Countdown to Any Google Gadget on your iGoogle page and countdown to any date you choose from your Google home page.

Cool Download: Election 08 for Your iPhone

Posted By Tech on Sep 5, 2008 at 6:00AM

If there has ever been a year to vote, this would be the one to do it! Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, obviously CitizenSugar has you covered on the details, but Election 08 is a handy little app to have in your pocket as well.

For only a buck at the App Store, Election 08 shows you real time results from polls about who is winning each state, and electoral vote estimates on who will take the General Election. Which of course, will either be a helpful tool to keep you informed, or cause you to go totally OCD from checking it every five minutes. Plus you can look back and see state-by-state results of past elections from 1992-2004! Facts that you can whip out at your next "Party" party to impress your pals. Aren't you smart!

BlackBerry Media Sync Is Now Available for Download!

Posted By Tech on Jul 24, 2008 at 6:00AM

Here's a little download that has been a long time coming — BlackBerry Media Sync. It's true, RIMarkable announced yesterday that Media Sync has been officially released, so we can put those, "Yes it's here," "No it's not here," rumors to rest. And why does this make me so happy? Because now I can put all my tunes from my laptop (including iTunes) on my smartphone. It's easy to use, intuitive, and you can control how much of your music is synced to your BlackBerry smartphone. Just click here to download.

Download of the Day: Send Tab URLs

Posted By Tech on Jul 12, 2008 at 10:03AM

Being the nut job that I am, I can't seem to cut back on the amount of tabs I keep open in Firefox — which usually total anywhere from 50 - 100. I know, I'm killing my RAM in the process and my MacBook is secretly threatening to crash on me once and for all. I used to be a big fan of CopyAllURLs, a handy Firefox add-on that would copy all of my open tabs and I could paste them in a text file. Therefore if Firefox ever crashed, and it didn't restore properly, I had all my fabulous tabs saved for future reference.

So you can understand how upset I was when I downloaded Firefox 3 and realized that CopyAllURLs wasn't compatible with the latest version of Firefox. Thankfully I found an even better add-on — Send Tab URLs. Send Tab URLs will not only create a list of all of the tabs from your browser, but it will send you an email with them as well (up to 24 tabs max)!

Keep Your Mac Cool by Controlling Your Laptop Fan

Posted By Tech on Jul 2, 2008 at 5:30AM

Last week I had one of those freak out moments when my laptop started acting like it had been possessed, as I had zero control over it. When it booted in safe mode, I knew it was time to get some backup assistance, and let's be honest, an involuntary safe boot on a Mac is almost like the blue screen of death on a PC.

Thankfully another resident geek guru came to my rescue and we both agreed that the 100-degree weather could be impairing my MacBook. And without further ado, he quickly installed one of his "fan favorites" (hee hee), smcFanControl. This free download allows you to control the built-in fan on every Intel Mac to make it run cooler. Macs are already insanely hot, so being able to rev up your fan from the default setting in hot weather definitely helps your Mac cool down. I've had it on full for the past week and it seems to be helping. Oh, and it also indicates the temperature of your laptop, so you can monitor whether you need the fan turned up.

Download of the Day: Baby Smash

Posted By Tech on Jun 27, 2008 at 1:00PM

Got kids? Nieces? Nephews? I'm sure you can relate to my pain when I mention the words computer, kids, and curiosity. There's nothing more fulfilling than watching a toddler learn their way around a computer, but what if they are still in the smash and bash stages of early development? That's when you need Baby Smash! Baby Smash is totally free and will "baby proof" your computer/laptop when your kiddies fingers decide to play the piano on your keyboard. But what's great about it is the fact that colored shapes, letters, and numbers will appear on the screen instead of harming your computer!

This download locks out the Windows Key, as well as Ctrl-Esc and Alt-Tab so your baby can't get out of the application. And by pressing ALT-F4 you can exit the application and Shift-Ctrl-Alt-O will bring you up the options dialog. Neat, right?!
